Do you know the “why” for 18 holes?

The first golf courses used to be nothing more than rabbit tracks and warrens.  The tracks were the fairways, and the warrens the holes.  Thus, the number of holes were defined by the number of warrens there were.

In the year of 1759, the first Stroke Play in history was held at the St. Andrews Royal & Ancient Golf Club, the famous R&A, which at the time was called St. Andrews Society of Golfers, and which happened to have 18 warrens.  During the celebration with the usual whisky, another Scottish icon, a coincidence was noticed:  a traditional bottle of whisky contains 18 nips.  Decided it was!  The number 18 should be the standard.  And that is how it has been done ever since.  Curious is that, when you want another nip of whisky, you just ask for “another round”.

And speaking of which… Do you know how to drink whisky?
Have a deep breath.  Have a sip and hold it in your mouth for like 2 or 3 seconds.  Then breath out through your nose, and then swallow it.  Just as with cognac, the flavor is not within the liquid itself, yet in the aroma.  It is during those 3 seconds holding it, that you will feel the true effect of whisky.  Cheers!
